ReadAmerica - Phonographix / Reading Reflex

Has anyone used any associates from ReadAmerica (phonographix method for reading)?

Years ago I called someone who had been recommended to me for Phonographix. Within 5 minutes on the phone she told me there was something deeply wrong with my DD, which only thousands of dollars of tests (done by her) would uncover the truth about. The hard sell wasn't for me, nor did I find the research base all that overwhelming. I went with plain old tutoring by a first grade teacher and two (now probably obsolete!) computer programs (Earobics and DaisyQuest) which taught phonological awareness. Had I been inclined to spend more on phonological awareness, I would have done FastForWord.

I am a big fan of the Phonographix method. I don't know any of the "associates" in the area, but from what I understand of the method and they way tutors using it are trained, "Big expensive tests" are NOT supposed to be a part of the method. It is a very quick and efficient way of teaching most children, including those who have serious reading difficulties. If you read the books associated with the method, the authors/inventors specifically criticize the reading programs that drag out the reading process for years, and require big fancy expensie tests. So I have my doubts about the associate the PP contacted and reallyhope he or she could report that associate to the Read America program that "recommended" her.

Meanhile, I learned everything I needed to about the method -- and used it very successfully with my elementary students and my own children -- from buying the book anhd just using the materials. FOr spelling "Super Speller" manual is fantastic IMO.
