The website offers very little info. I got a tour, but the director was not present. I didn't get a sense of community, but staff seemed nice from what I saw and, genetally, the children appeared happy. It appeared a little crowded, but it seems that most Bethesda pre-k's have about 16-20 students. The Mon-Fri class has 3 certified teachers, which I think is great. There doesn't appear to be a daily routine classes adhere to - couldn't really get a straight answer on a specific time for recess or lunch and apparently each class does "their own thing". I don't mind somewhat of a loose schedule, as long as there are some basics involved, such as circle time, learning time, recess, etc in a similar order each day.
It's just not the type of place where you can look at their website and learn about the structure, calendar of events (such as back to school night), class ratio, etc or one where they try to foster a sense of community between parents and peers. I asked if I could meet the teachers and I was told that I could come between opening and closing, rather than given a time slot for a one on one meeting. But, maybe it won't be a problem if I straight out request it. However, it seems like they meet the basic criteria of a good balance between academics and play and I like that there are 3 teachers in the room. The administrative staff seems very busy. Approachable, but busy. All in all it seems like there won't be too much of a personal touch, but that my child will get an experience that will help prepare him for kindergarten. Any experiences? |
