Feeling the school stress already.

Our children are in elementary school. They only play one sport so we don't overschedule them. Too many extra activities (family dance, teacher basketball games, field trips, monthly classroom activity where parents are invited, etc). Feeling overwhelmed already

Teacher basketball games? Why do you need to attend this?

It always sounds like a lot when they tell you about it all at once, but IMO it doesn't feel that bad in reality. And other than attending school, the rest is optional and a lot of it I just don't sign up for. Especially since at lot of the special activities don't begin until 7pm and my kids go to bed at 7:45.

It's not as bad as it sounds OP.

+1
We never sign up for any of those evening activities. They're not mandatory.

maybe home schooling would be a preferable option - folks I know that do this are done by midday/ early afternoon

Sorry OP. Just remember you 9or your children) don't have to actually do all those things...

Many of the activities you mention are done with the intention of forming community and fostering school spirit. If schools did not offer these types of events, people would complain. These all sound like nice events to me. As others mentioned, they are not mandatory. Do what your schedule allows and be grateful that the staff and PTA at your school go the extra mile to offer such events.

Do you work?

When I was working, I felt it was a lot. Now that I am a SAHM, I look forward to all the events. I'm very involved in the PTA and help organize them.

Thank you for your honesty PP. Please remember what it was like as a working parent and getting deluged with everything at the beginning of school. It's like taking on a fourth job keeping up with everything.

OP, I haven't heard yet of anything like what you are describing.

I SAH (happily) and do not look forward to all of the events. A few, yes, but many are super lame.

Unfortunately, DC is an extrovert and wants to participate in every event at school.

Since the post in the VA Public Schools forum, I would guess the kid is in a Virginia public school.
