I have a bad case of white coat syndrome and am irrationally afraid of going to the doctor. Mostly I need to find a gynecologist and also a physician for a regular physical. I haven't been to any sort of doctor in more years than I care to admit. I'm a 45 year old mother of two. I live in DC proper so would prefer someone in the city.
Any recommendations? I need a pap, mammogram, regular physical with blood work and I also need to see a dermatologist. Ugh, I can feel my blood pressure going up just thinking about this but I can't put it off any longer. |
| I love Sheida Chaikin in Woodley Park at Comprehensive Primary Care. She is a PA if that matters, but she really takes her time, does a very thorough history and physical, and will put you at ease. Even if you go with another provider, I would recommend just going to a PCP and getting your Pap done there and mammogram referral, so you don't need two visits with two different providers. If you don't have any gyn-specific complaints, you don't necessarily need a gyn. Best of luck! |

Dr Susan Hurson or GYN
Dr Lucy McBride for GP Both are fabulous, and they are both in the Foxhall building on New Mexico. They will both spend a lot of time with you. Neither takes insurance. |
| Sue Kanter in Bethesda. |
| Alan Morrison and Shannon green |
| Soma Chakraborty is a great GYN. She was with Kaiser in DC but I think has left (I left Kaiser so I've lost track). If you google her you might be able to find where she ended up. |

Dr Blackburn at Reiter Hill is wonderful and very empathetic and takes a lot of time.
Anyone you go with, I would advise that you let them know in advance of your concerns so they treat you with even more empathy and understanding. |
| Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I hadn't though of going to a PCP for the pap smears but that's a good idea. I do plan on discussing IUD options. Would I need a gyn for that? |
I don't know that a PCP can place an IUD, but I do know a GYN can perform physicals and order blood work. When I didn't have insurance I paid out of pocket to see a GYN. She went ahead and did everything for me so I wasn't paying for another office visit elsewhere. |
| Where I work, half the PCPS do paps and contraception and well woman care A few are trained to place IUD. A mix of MD and PA. |
| Nancy Sanders, MD. She can set you up with an IUD.She is a very kind and gentle person. |
| Tiffani Lucas, MD is just awesome. Super smart and really takes time with you and explains things. I just love her. |
I had severe white coat syndrome and Reiter Hill was terrible. Dr. Jackson is the biggest bitch around. Avoid Reiter Hill, OP! |
| Dr Karen Myers at Washington Internists Group (downtown) was super nice, professional, empathic with me. She diagnosed my hypothyroidism. |
