We found that my young elementary school aged child will have lunch at 10:00. Anyone else in this boat? What is a strategy that works? Kid will stay on in SACC before and after school...

That is ridiculous. Yet common.
So, for the school afternoon snack time, basically pack a second light lunch with both a protein and a carb; something that can be eaten relatively quickly (e.g., nothing that needs to be cut up or eaten with a utensil). They will also get a snack in SACC after school. Bring a small snack in the car in case they are hungry when you pick them up. See how they do and adjust the afternoon snack. |
| Wow. This is what happens when the schools are overcrowded. I taught back in the day, and sometimes our lunch was before 11--but I don't ever recall as early as 10. This is one of the things the SB doesn't think about when they created these mega elementary schools. |
This is what happens when classrooms are added but capacity in the cafeteria or gymnasium is not added. When my children were in ES we had the same problem even though the school was not at "capacity" due to an expansion. I don't know what they do now as there are several hundred more sudents at the school and they have used up all the capacity and then some. |
| I'm sure there will be an afternoon snack in the classroom. You'll want to pack something substantial for that snack as well as an additional snack for after school. |

That is so not acceptable.
Smh... |

OP -- we are indeed in the middle of construction, and cafeteria scheduling was discussed at length with the PTA. There was an assurance that the cafeteria is large enough to accommodate the growth, without having recourse to these schedules that are both unhealthy and interfere with kid's ability to focus. So this is actually a big surprise.
On top of it, playground access is restricted to once a week, and because of the construction, kids have entirely lost access to the field and only have access 2xweek to the blacktop. The remaining days will be spent in the little front yard of the school, surrounded by traffic and construction dust ... I don;t even know what our options are. This is completely out of control... |
One of the years I was in high school, my lunch was at 9:05. I had two classes, then had lunch.
I then had school until 2:15, and after school (four days per week) until 5:30-7:30. It was tough. |
| When does school end? My kid has lunch at 10am but school ends at 2:45 so he will be home by 3:30 and can eat then. |
| We had this when my son was in K. He's never hungry when he first gets up but would eat a little before morning SACC. Lunch was about 10 and I'd pack two big snacks. One was for the afternoon in class and the other was for the after care program. |
I'm guessing we are at the same school. I don't know how this is going to work. DD has a 1pm lunch at least but the bell times are ridiculous too. |
OP said SACC. He may not be home until 6. |
What does his mean playground access is restricted to once a week? Kids only get to play on the playground one time a week? What do they do at recess? And this is an eS right? This is totally ridiculous. |
They don't serve a snack in the after school program or allow kids to eat snacks brought from home? |
| You pack a good snack for the afternoon. His class WILL have snack time. Also SACC serves a variety of snacks after school. |
