| Just curious how much time on average other 7th graders in the DC metropolitan area spend doing homework? Does 3 hours/night sound unreasonable? |
If it's truly 3 hours, 7 nights a week...probably. But if it's 3 hours M-Th, and not just repetitive/make work stuff it might be ok. Depends on one's kid and his or her goals. |

You need to know your child. For some it would be too much. For others, not enough.
What do you think is going on, OP? |
| That is not out of the normal range for my DS, who was 7th last year. But it depends on the kids, course load and homework. AAP/ Honors classes? Advanced math? academic electives (like a foreign language)? Does this include putting in some time every day on long term projects? Are you including time spent practicing an instrument for band? Also realize that things take longer at the beginning of the year-- particularly if your MS starts in 7th. Kids tend to get more efficient as the year goes on-- they learn to do homework during their free period or on the bus, and get a better sense of how to structure homework time to get more done. | It also depends on how your child is using that time. If it is three hours of true working every night, yes, that's excessive. But, if those three hours include distractions -- digital or otherwise -- be sure to subtract that time out to get a more accurate picture. |
