How was your elementary school aged child's first week of school?

My DC had a smooth transition and seems to like school.

Same.

Bad.

The exact same issues that got him poor grades last year are surfacing again this year.
I have already gently reminded the sped teacher and gen ed teacher of their duties, as described in the IEP.

I REALLY hope things will turn around. I don't want another year like last year's.

I have heard nothing....(Other than that the same kid that always picks on him is still picking on him, so no miracle summer solution there...).
I am holding my breath for back-to-school night and hoping I don't get pulled aside for "the talk." That's what happened in preschool, and I was totally taken off guard.

Mine is lovely at school and horrid at home. Sigh.

Rough first couple of days, but last 2 days were better. I'm hoping things continue to improve!

Last year was a nightmare so we started meds over the summer. The school worked with us on class make-up over the summer. Got a good behavior note today. From the teacher. Thinking things may be a million times better this year.

It went fine.... Without his ADHD med. Was stressed all week. We are starting meds next week and have asked his teachers to keep an eye out and see if there is a difference.

DS has asked to be on back on meds. Cannot sit still and is in constant motion.

This exercise is mostly due to some of his teachers last year, who did not think DS needs to be on meds for his ADHD, combined type.

Mine too. I'm sick of it and it is only the first week!

No idea how it went since didn't hear a thing from the teacher. And I know from past experience to not trust my son's reports on how things went.

If you have an IEP, you can ask for reports. We designate a weekly report in the IEP and have a communication log in the cloud.

We sold our house and bought a house in a new neighborhood specifically to get away from our old elementary. So far our DD is very happy and had an amazing week. We are so hopeful it continues. It may have been costly but a happy kid is so worth it.

Pp would you mind sharing a little more? We are thinking about this as things are horrible for DD.

Well, our daughter was having a horrible time for two years at her old es. They didn't provide the support she needed even when it was in writing. A couple of friends with kids with various needs raved about their school and the support they provided. We visited the school my friends kids attended. After a lot of thought and a really terrible few months last year we put our house on the market. We were lucky and sold and bought before school started this year. Doing this is not for the faint of heart. It was crazy, super expensive, and a huge pain. There were also no guarantees. It was all worth it when on days 2 through 5 she jumped out of bed and got ready with no argument and when she got off the bus in the afternoon with a huge smile.

My advice to you, PP, is talk to lots of people in real life about the strengths and weaknesses of the elementary schools you may consider. The school we left was a great school for high achieving kids and kids with certain special needs but awful for the shy, anxious, LD kid that I have. Then, talk to the principal and at least one teacher. Ask what they feel their strengths are and what they are working toward. Do not tell them anything about your kid until after this question. Listen closely. Good luck PP. I wish your child success and you the courage to do what your kid needs.
