Can you stain a pine wood bed a darker stain?

| Thinking about buying a bed frame that only comes in a pine finish (assume it has clear stain). Is it possible to stain it darker? Can I just apply a darker stain or would I have to sand it and then stain it? |

| Usually light sanding to open the grain, then stain, then varnish so it seals it. |
