Homework from Day One

Are other parents annoyed by their 1st grader coming home with homework from day one?

I mean if they can't make it through 1 day whats the point of trying to do school. Yup pull them out....

We had it in K on the first week, although not the first day. I am annoyed by any homework they give in the younger grades. Studies show it has no benefit and I think the kids spend enough time on structured work. They should be allowed to learn through play when school is not in session.

Unless the homework was something like, "ask your parents to bring in the school supplies they brought for you" or "write your name on your pencil box," I think homework on the first day is dumb and could even be a sign of a bigger problem with the teacher. S/he should know that first day of keeping everything together in class can be stressful and tasking on a first grader, so anyone expecting THAT PLUS HEY WHY NOT DO SOME MATH EQUATIONS from the kid on that first day may not really have an accurate grip on what a kid that age can reasonably be expected to handle.

Unless s/he's just asking you to do the normal 15-30 minutes of reading per night with the kid, which is basically a year round assignment and not something I really think of as "homework" per se.

OP here. When will I ever learn with this group? Sigh.

Perhaps a better question would be how many parents here have kids who go to 1st grade with homework from day one? I wonder if this a widely used practice or if our EOTP DCPS is an outlier.

Day 1 in second grade at Yu Ying! I don't like it but not going to pull out because of it. Didn't start for a month in K and 1st.

Same for third grade. It is ridiculous and I went to third grade in an Asian country known for their rigor and even they did not do this.

10-12 page worksheet packet, with a reminder to read every night.

Was the packet to be completed that night or by the end of the week? If it's the latter, I don't think this is egregious.

NP with a K student who gets a packet every Tuesday. It's due on the following Tuesday.
