Have you ever lied about your religious beliefs for personal gain?

Anonymous
I'm asking because I saw Trump get asked what was his favorite passage in the bible (after he keeps on saying how the bible is his favorite book of all time) and he spun it as how it is personal and doesn't want to answer.

we all know trump really isn't religious (i don't think barack is either). It doesn't bother me, but it bothers me that agnostics/athiests have to lie to run for public office.

I'm curious if anyone here has lied about their faith for personal gain - political, monetary, personal, sexual - whatever kind of gain.

No. And I am not sure how/why you could/would.

Also how do we all know Trump or Barack isn't religious. They may well be and it may well be personal to them.

Also.... wtf, lying about faith for sexual gain?

Never.

If I ever visit family in the Middle East, I will lie and pretend I am a non-practicing Muslim instead of letting people know that I am Catholic. The chances that I will set foot in the Middle East is very slim though.

LOL. I think this means you tell the cute fundamentalist that you think gays are going to hell in order to get her to sleep with you. As you said, wtf.

Yes. I pretended to convert to Christianity so that I can run for public office one day.

So, my heart and soul continues to belong to my one true Emperor - the one who connects your soul directly to the Supreme.

And since Jesus does forgive everything - he is my plan B.

So I am all set!

I am Catholic, and occasionally downplay it in social situations. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for the eye rolls and negative comments. But I would never outright deny my Catholicism. If it directly comes up, I am sincere, even if there might be negative consequences.

I can't stand when politicians pretend to be more religious than they are. Be who you are.

Huh? Were you originally Muslim?

And why would you think Muslims in the Middle East can't handle having a Christian around? There are actually Christians in the Middle East and they have to live there, I'm sure you can survive visiting.

+1
Muslims are fine with Christian wives. It's Christian husbands that can't be abided.

"Nones" make up 20% of the population but only 1 member of the 535 members of the combined house and senate, so I think some of them are lying.

I haven't done so, but have suspected other people. For instance, I worked with a guy who seemed to pretend to be Jew to get days off. He told me he didn't go to a synagogue, didn't wear a yarmulke and ate everything without caring whether it was kosher.

He's probably Jewish and not practicing.

My aunt by marriage literally does nothing with her faith except identify as Jewish and I totally don't get it.

In grad school most of our faculty were Jewish and there were a couple of guys in my class who pretended to be Jewish because they thought their advisors would like them better and do more in terms of going out of their way to help them professionally.

Sometimes I'm discrete about being an atheist.
