3rd Grade Assessments on second day of school???

Anonymous
Was this county-wide? My 3rd grader came home complaining of a long "three hour" test (granted, it may have been 45 minutes) with "106 spelling words," a hot classroom and uncomfortable chairs and only one break. Great way to psych them up for the school year. !

I would shoot the teacher an e-mail and ask what they did today. You may get a different version of events.

Agree with PP.

It may have been a 30 minute assessment with a break in the middle.

Also, with the applications for the Highly Gifted Center coming up rather quickly, and teachers having to fill out an evaluation sheet for each applicant, it's good they get to know (academically) their students as soon as possible.

I think that probably the classroom would have been hot and the chairs uncomfortable even without 106 spelling words.

Are we really complaining about work and tests already? If they started off doing nothing we would get people saying the teachers don't teach.

School starts the first day of school. If you don't want it to, don't send them until your cream puff can handle it - or maybe when the weather is more tolerable for them.

Exactly.

Wait for the "it's not developmentally appropriate" and "oh my poor little boy can't control himself" arguments. they will probably start in 5, 4, 3, 2, . . . .

I do feel badly for the kids and teacher if the room is hot. The AC in my DC's class a few years ago broke down at the end of the year. It was miserable in there. But, life goes on. Kids many years ago dealt with a room with no AC or even a fan. We are coddling kids way too much. The assessment may also be for the teacher to find out where the kids are.

They do a lot of placement testing at the beginning of third grade. I remember my older kids complaining about the endless tests the first two weeks of 3rd grade. My youngest is in 3rd now and I think his teacher is being stealthy about the assessments because he talks about the assignments he's doing in class but he doesn't consider them to be tests - with the exception of math. He is aware he took a math test.

The teacher may have been assessing for "Words Their Way" to determine which sorts are appropriate for each kid. I doubt it took three hours.

"But you haven't taught them anything yet!"

was my comment to DD's 2nd grade teacher. She gave a math assessment the 2nd day of school. She had plans to include the grade for 1st marking period (they did not have a summer math packet)

The assessment was fine - but using it for a grade?

You know, I'm a micromanager, and even I think that it's excessive micromanaging to question the teacher's decision here. Let the woman do her thing, for heaven's sake.

I really don't like that my DD was given a test on the second day of school. She should have been coloring or organizing glue sticks. I'm outraged (and live in a W cluster). The first month of school should be getting used to be being back in class, not doing hard work. She had a very busy summer of camps and vacations. It's not fair.

My DD had a spelling test today (2nd day of 3rd grade) no biggie.

Then, keep her in preschool another year.
