Dr. Larsen at GWU

Anonymous
Any experience with Dr. Larsen (high risk OB) at GWU? We've seen him once and liked him, but I'm not crazy about the wait times and impossibility in booking appointments at GWU. Any insight into what I'm in for down the road would be appreciated. Thanks!

Am a patient at GWU, but not of Dr. Larsen's. I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a nurse to call me in or more than another 5 minutes after the initial intake is done to see my doctor. I did have to wait a whole hour for my week 20 sono but that was because there was an emergency sono that got put in my appointment time. I have also had no problem making appointments or changing appointments at the last minute because of issues at work. Good luck!

Insider tip: You can book multiple appointments at once. I think it is two or three in advance. We had Marfori/ Bathgate and Janakirman and we loved all of them. Good luck!. Morning are usually the best times to go

The thing I really hated about GWU on the 5th floor is the majority of the front desk staff; rude, uninterested and not very helpful. The actual medical care is very good I think. Wait times were acceptable.

I saw Dr. Larsen for my nufold (sp?) test and he will be doing my amnio in 2 weeks. And, he will deliver me if I deliver before 32 weeks. The practice I work with uses him for high risk stuff. I agree about the office staff however. I have found them very rude. But, that is not too different unfortunately than other offices...

I just switched from 2141 K to Dr. Gaba at GW and I LOVE her! I was in and out of my 8am appt by 8:20 and everyone was really nice. They did let me book 2 appts out, so I made sure to get the 8am appt each time.
I didnt find the front desk people rude at all. They cant seem to find my records, so thats a small problem, but that might be 2141 K's fault.

I saw Dr. Larsen for some problems and he was wonderful. He is VERY highly respected and has been for a long time. Consider yourself lucky to have him as a doctor

P.S.
My mother also worked for him many years ago as an OB nurse (just a coincidence that I was then referred to him.) Anyway, she loved him and I think if staff loved him that speaks well of a person too

I've been switching to Dr Larsen (now in Reichter Hill). I saw him once for a referral for toxoplasmosis and he was very patient, answered my questions, and knowledgeable. Does he take patients who are not high risk?

If you don't want to deal with residents during and after delivery - Holy Cross - Dr. Pinkert

PP here, sorry - I just reread the OP's post and see that she is just asking about amnio and not delivery.

I've seen Dr. Larsen throughout my pregnancy and I really like him. (I am not high risk, for those wondering if that's all he deals with.) He knows his stuff.

Another appointment tip: He sees patients in Bethesda on Tuesdays, and it's much less hectic there than downtown. I know that doesn't work for everyone, but I thought I'd mention it.

I recently saw Dr. Larsen and personally it was not a good fit. I'm at the late stage of my pregnancy and it was recommended to me that I see other doctors in the practice. Dr. Larsen is very well respected but is lacking in bedside manner. If you like a personable doctor, than I wouldn't recommend him. Just my experience.

I think it just depends on personal fit. I found Dr. Larsen very personable and to me he had a very reassuring bedside manner.

I delivered my first child with Dr. Larsen but not my second and third. I had no problems with Dr. Larsen himself until the delivery day but we had major problems with the front desk staff and one of the nurses. On one occasion the front desk checked the wrong box on my chart and the nurse rudely told me that Dr. Larsen only sees patients that are pregnant. My appointment that day was to get the results from test to tell us if our baby was ok. The nurse insisted I was not pregnant which of course to me meant that the tests came back bad. It turns out it was a clerical error but I was never apologized to.
I had a c-section and Dr. Larsen did deliver my dd but he left before I was closed up and I had major bleeding complications because of a bad closing.

My 2nd and 3rd were delivered by Dr. Collea at Georgetown and I can not say enough good things about him, his staff and the hospital nurses.
Both hospitals are teaching hospitals nut just because a doctor is skilled does not mean his students are.

I adore Dr. Larsen and had him for both of my pregnancies. I particularly liked his bedside manner (kind of old school but charming) - in fact, it's why I switched to him from Bathgate, who was not my type. ymmv - to each their own. I really loved having him as my ob, altho he didn't deliver either of my babies! Macri and Gaba did and I liked both of them, as well. re: appt times, Monday morning 1st appt was the best for me, wait wise. front desk ppl were evil. no 2 ways around it. nuff to make your hormonal self cry.
