Does anyone have any experience with the program or any kids there now? New building, competitive testing to get into the program, it seems like a good tuition-free opportunity, especially if there isn't a huge bullying problem. The biggest issue may be lack of diversity, i guess. Thanks in advance. Looking ahead now for a STEM-oriented, motivated and independent 7th grader.
Is there one? Wow, crickets! We (DC Urbanmom folks) should come and take over then!
There are sci-tech programs at Oxon Hill and Flowers high schools which require testing for admission. I have heard good things about both programs in terms of the quality of students and where they end up attending college. The program at these schools is supposed to be similar to Rosevelt's program.
Oxon Hill program has been around for a LONG TIME....as someone who went to PG county schools HS bullying didn't really exist. Oxon Hill S&T program has a good number of Asian Americans as well so I don't think diversity would much of a problem
Have you looked into the CMIT charter school? They are STEM focused and if I am correct are expanding all the way up to 12 grade; this may be an additional option.
OHHS S&T Program has been around for many years. The school is very diverse in many ways. Bullying is non existent and with new boundary changes the school is mostly S&T. The school also has a lot of great academies, a great band and choir. OH offers Lacrosse which was a big plus for my DS. I would really look at it if I were you OP.
Yay!!! Kid plays lax and an instrument!!! I think we may have a winner! Test prep, just in case, ofcourse. Thanks so much for the responses.

I've had some family members attend. My husband went there and his old classmates are very successful (class of 99). My four cousins went there- one has an MBA from Harvard, one is doing her post doc at cal tech, one went to Yale and the last one went to duke. He's getting his phd in math now. We have some friends kids who recently graduated and off to great colleges.
You might want to go and talk to the teachers etc to see for yourself. |
It's been around a very long time- was the "Roosevelt of Southern PG"- the same S/T program and requirements and diploma. Same with Flowers although Flowers is the newest of the three. The only thing CMIT does not have that OHHS/ERHS/Flowers have are sports and number of students
