Peanut and treenut ban, but my daughter is allergic to milk

Anonymous
She doesn't eat meat unless it is hot. My daughter is anaphylactic to milk but her class has a nut ban (which is a big source of her protein). What can I pack besides eggs and hummus?
Anonymous
Appeal the nut ban. There may be no one in the class actually allergic to nuts.

I think she needs to eat meat. Or pack hot soups (with meat) in thermoses.

Meatballs and sauce or Refried beans in a thermos
Will she eat chicken or tuna salad?
Quinoa?

Nom Nom paleo had some lunchbox ideas recently that were nut-free

Does she like sun butter? My DD had it at preschool and likes it better than peanut butter. Cheaper at trader joes.

Chili; red beans and rice (with sausage) could both easily be kept warm in a thermos. I buy a metal thermos and warm it up with boiling water before I put the food in it. It will stay warm (not hot though) until lunchtime.

Maybe demand a milk ban, oh the shitstorm it would create!

Honestly, when I was a substitute teacher at a private school with a peanut and tree nut ban, I saw lots of items with nuts in the lunchroom and never saw a teacher throw anything away or police it.

On a side note- if your DD has anaphylaxis to milk why is there no ban in her class?

At our daycare the room my DD moved into had a nut ban (my DD has a grain allergy) and we use PB for her a good amount so when the child with the nut allergy moved up, I asked them to change the room back. Luckily they did.

Goodluck!

sunbutter and honey sandwich or sunbutter and jelly sandwich.

have you tried any of the vegan/soy cheeses?

My kids don't mind sun flower butter at all. I make "pb and J's" with it and no one protests. I don't even think I mentioned it to one when when I had to make the switch and he never noticed.

Yeah, my DS relies on nuts heavily for his protein and fats as well. He's in a nut-free class, so we use sunbutter. No complaints from him, we still call it 'peanut butter'. (I made a point to tell his teachers that we use sunflower seed butter, so they aren't concerned about his 'PB sandwiches'.)

My kid also loves tofu, even cold and plain.

Lentils or other beans? Black beans and pinto beans are also favorites for my DS.

Are you forcing your child to be a meat eater?

No. We are a semi-veg house, probably only have meat 3x a week. I find deli meat repulsive and so we don't have turkey (etc) sandwiches.

make your own then - roast beef, pork tenderloin, even chicken breast can be cooked with min effort and used in sandwiches.

She is giving examples of non-meat protein sources since the OP mentioned that her DD only likes meat that is "hot."

Again, not the point of the post. But thanks for the dose of smugness.
