How do I get a day 3 ultrasound when I am out of town?

Anonymous
I'm going to attend a friend's wedding in Chicago this weekend and I think I will be on day 3 of my cycle. I'm at Shady Grove and they said that they would not give me an order for outside monitoring at a clinic in Chicago. Also, my insurance said that they wouldn't cover this outside monitoring either. Basically, I'm screwed. Even if I was willing to pay out-of-pocket at the Chicago center that I found, I need an order from a doctor to do it. Any one have any bright ideas?

I think you're screwed I'm sorry this is why infertility is so hard, takes over your life even if you don't want it to.

Sorry, OP. No ideas here. My clinic asked ahead of time for any dates I need to plan around...I think your type of situation is exactly why they do it.

Yeah I think you're out of luck. Will need to postpone to next cycle.

My clinic allowed me to do a 2 day and 4 day ultrasound when I was travelling. Depending on when your period starts, you might only be a few hours off.

Dominion let me do it either a day early or late. I can't remember which.

Can you do day 2 scan instead? I didn't have day 3 scan... I remember coming 2 day and then they told me to come 2 days later. Maybe our its case by case situation?

I did a baseline ultrasound at a (prestigious) out-of-state clinic when I went in for a consult. I was mid cycle, right before ovulation.
I, too, will be out of town, and they told me I didn't need the baseline ultrasound on Day 3, just the bloodwork. But I do have to get a saline sonogram a few days later, when I'm back.

What was SG reason for declining to give you a lab order? Was it the nurse or the DR who refused it? I would insist. At what it costs, it's ridiculous that they are difficult about it.

If no luck, I would call your ob/gyn or PCP, explain the situation and ask for a lab order.

If still no luck, look for a friend of a friend who is a Dr or PA to give you an order. For heaven's sake this is an ultrasound not some highly sensitive intervention.

I was allowed to do a "day 3" ultrasound on day 2 and on day 4 with two different cycles where I was out of town on day 3. This was at SG. If you are available on one of those two days, they should be able to work with you.

I'm surprised. I'm with SGF and needed to do one of the monitoring appt at another location. I would push to see why they won't do it.

SG recently allowed me to do most ultrasounds and bloodwork out of state when I had to travel. They happily gave me the order. I am confused as to why they would say not to you.

09:11... OP here. -- Love your advice. Probably because I was thinking the exact same thing. I was losing my mind at the constant backlash I was getting. I did go to my PCP after all the push back I got from SG and believe it or not my PCP said she wouldn't give me the order because my fertility clinic wouldn't give me one! I could write more, but I'm so over this craziness. Someone told me that the medical system is geared this way so that insurance companies don't have to cover too many tests. Anyway, my next thought was to enlist an MD friend in my pursuit. But thankfully, it won't have to come to that. I just got my period today and I can make it for the ultrasound before I leave for my flight.

Btw, I think my day 3 issue for SG was because I have Aetna and they will only cover day 3 sonograms.

Thanks you all! I get to do my day 3 monitoring and hopefully make my flight to Chicago!

What was SG's reason for refusing? If it's because it's your first US with them and it's required by Aetna to authorize the cycle then yes, it's a pickle, but really not SG's fault, but the insurance company's.

Couldn't you tell them that you'd pay out of pocket?
