Painting hardwoods or parquet flooring?

We are buying a house that has parquet under carpeting on the 2nd level. Carpet makes my skin crawl so I plan to rip it up. Assuming the floor is not in disasterous condition I am going to rip out all the staples and tack strips, sand it down and then paint it. Not using wood filler. It just cracks up and falls out in my experience.

We plan to do new hardwoods down the road, but need a cheap non-carpeted solution in the meantime and I thought this was a good solution since I like the look (thanks google images!) and it doesn't seem like rocket science. Anyone have feedback?
