PK Question

Do kids usually have backpacks in prek? Lunch boxes?

How about for their nap mats, sheets and blanket or something else?

Yes to backpacks. Yes to lunchboxes if your child is bringing lunch from home. My daughter ate school lunch most of the year. This year, we're taking it one day at a time (our school has free lunch for everyone so we don't have to decide). We also sent a blanket for her mat every week. No sheets required.

Yes - backpacks, lunchboxes (when we send food with them), and nap mats. It was on the supply list for us.

OP did you get a supply list? If not, check the school's website. Some post the lists there.

No supply list. We were just told to bring a change of clothes and blanket for the first day. We were told we would find out what other supplies we needed after the first week. Just want to make sure we have the essentials covered.

What school, OP?

The one thing I was not expecting last week was the structure of snack. Snack was not provided by the school and the teacher created a rotation for parents to bring in snack for the week. Otherwise, we brought in the supplies that were generally recommended for PK by DCPS and asked the teacher what else was needed.

Since there are not really "lists" for PK the way there are for other grade, I would just do what the teacher suggests - bring a blanket for nap and a change of clothes. Your child will only have one day of school this week anyway. My guess is that you will be asked to bring crayons, construction paper, glue (bottle and stick), Kleenex, hand sanitizer, and maybe a few other things. Our classroom could have always used more Clorox wipes and paper towels.

OP - we're also at Seaton for PK4. My DC brings her lunch box because we send in some snacks. She eats breakfast, lunch and supper at school. You are welcome to send in some snacks as well but it is not mandatory.

Last year, when DC was in PK3, we were asked to bring sheets, blankets, change of clothes, wipes, box of tissue, paper towel and hand sanitizer. We were not asked to bring crayons or any other school supplies. Those were provided by the school. We still have not received the "supplies list" from our teacher but I will just send in sheets, blanket, small pillow on the first day. The classrooms have nap mats that the kids use.

Hope this helps!

Some schools have cots, so only a blanket may be needed. In addition to what others mentioned, I highly recommend a prefilled water bottle your child can easily open and close. It's a shame but DCPS only offers plain milk with its meals (fed. regs). Kids can of course go to the water fountain to drink water but those fountains are often at quite a distance and there is no way kids can take in enough water one sip at a time.

Aside from the fact that milk just isn't liked by all kids, jugging down a carton of milk before lunch really compromises any kid's willingness to try foods they may be unfamiliar with, much less eat enough to carry them through the rest of the day.

Waiting for the a future First Lady to run on a "drink more water" campaign and get this all resolved!

Good point about sending water bottles. I send everybody in DC's lunch box. I know for sure the PK3 clssrooms at Seaton have water fountains. Not sure about the PK4 classrooms.
