Just bought a 1930s colonial. Bathrooms are ceramic black and white tile on walls, basketweave pattern on the floor. Overall in decent shape, maybe about 10% with cracks.
We're interested in doing some tile repairs/replacements (I've heard Community Forklift stocks old tiles). Does anyone have experience with doing repair / repair / restoration? Can you recommend a contractor? We could also just reglaze wall tiles white, but I'm thinking it may be too blah. |
I will let you know the first week of September. I just contracted to have about 20 tiles replaced. You lucked out with white and black tiles. We have pale yellow and had to special order them. |
Not OP, but please do let us know. Same problem here. I would be ever so grateful if you shared the name and phone of person doing replacement. I'm in NoVa, and have been looking for someone for a long time. Thanks so much and good luck OP too. |
OP- I have looked for a mud tile contractor. There must be someone who does this, as there remain homes with these bathrooms and furthermore, they seem to be making a bit of a comeback.
I'm still looking and will let you know if I hear of anyone. |
13:09 here I'm back with my update. My bathroom tiles look amazing. I used Grout Genie. I had about 30 tiles replaced. It took them a few days, but I am so happy with the result. My bathroom is one of the yellow and black ones and the toughest part was matching the tile. The tiles are even and well set. I wound up special ordering from a tile shop in north arlington. The tile match is about as good as you can get considering the original tile was set in the 1940s. I hated my bathroom and all the cracked tiles. The thought of putting $14k into a room that was 5x7 was just out of my budget. This repair was less than $2k. My new vanity arrives Saturday and the new floor goes in too. My mini bathroom update will cost under $4k and I'm so happy with it! Good luck to others suffering through old bathrooms. Grout Genie gets my endorsement. |
That's awesome! So glad to hear. I'll totally get in touch. So you just found the matching tile and provided it to them - and they did all the work of removing and replacing? |
ugh! they don't work in the district ![]() |
Yes, I provided the tile, they provided everything else and hauled everything away. One note - I hadn't really anticipated how dusty it would be. I've lived through construction before so I should've known better. I didn't empty the vanity or the medicine cabinet and there's a good layer of dust in there. |
Thanks much for getting back to us with your experience and the business used. I'm glad you had a good experience, and will keep them in mind for sure. |
