$3.99 for a dozen! I just spent over $10 for my family's weekly egg consumption. It might be time to rethink chickens.
Try a store like Shoppers or one of the "world markets" that cater to the African/Caribbean/Latino communities. I can usually buy 2 dozen eggs there for $4.50 or less.
I have been paying around that much for a very long time. I usually get the cage-free extra large eggs from Trader Joe's. I figure that's marginally better than buying those from caged hens.
I think there is some kind of shortage in the mid west.
Many egg farms have been forced to kill their entire flock of chickens to quell the avian flu epidemic (which only infects birds, not humans.) I read that the turkey farms are in trouble, too, so expect some high turkey prices in November. |

It's because of the avian flu.

Even before the bird flu problems, they were already having issues on the west coast because California passed a "free-range" law that doubles the amount of space the egg-laying chickens must have to live. Since it is impossible for most farms to double the size of their space, many halved the size of their flocks. This had already caused a noticeable increase in egg prices in the western states. The avian flu made everything so much worse nationwide, though.
There was a sign at local Safeway egg saying "due to egg shortage...". It was 519 for 1 1/2 dozen.
There is a guaranteed increase in the price of Thanksgiving turkeys for the same reason.
I'd love to cut back on our consumption, but having ready to eat hardboiled eggs makes a great snack for my teens.
Where are you people shopping? I paid $2.39 this morning at Wegmans.
Sorry, $2.49.
I'm not paying that much, but I am beginning to ration our eggs a bit. There are a lot of things that we make with eggs that can easily be made with fewer or with a substitute binder or leavener. Try searching vegan recipes for tips. I'm not a vegan, but I made an eggless cake for my fiance's birthday that was a big hit. It used seltzer water instead of eggs.

Safeway, and it didn't matter which brand.
I wonder why the bird flu hasn't affected chicken prices |
