What's the best way to keep them clean? Windex? Bathroom cleaner? Squeegee? |
I asked this question a few months ago and got a great answer.... Bar keepers friend. It is a powder scrub that really, really works well. I don’t use it for EVERY cleaning, but every couple of months I use it to thoroughly clean grime. For regular cleaning, I use my bathroom cleaner weekly and use a squeegee after showering. |
I was at a pool and saw them carrying around a big jug of white vinegar to clean glass tables. Worked well for that. |
First, you have to get them clean. Lots of stuff works for that - BKF, Vinegar and Dawn, Kaboom - doesn't really matter. Get a scrub brush and get to it.
Then, keeping them clean - SQUEEGEE IS THE ONLY ANSWER! You don't have to squeegee after every single shower, but I squeegee after mine and DH doesn't squeegee after his, and it keeps it an acceptable level of clean to only be doing it every other shower. Then, you need to do a cleaning on a regular basis. I personally do it once a week because it is just so much easier to clean it when it is already clean. I think you could stretch as long as every two weeks, but no longer. Use whatever cleaning product you like (I like Kaboom, easy to spray on) and then it will just take a very quick scrub and rinse to keep it totally clean. I spray it on before I take a shower, let it sit about 5 mins, and then quickly hit it with a scrub brush I keep in the shower. Rinse off, I get in and shower, and then squeegee down at the end. Hand-held shower head is also key to making cleaning easy. I have a Delta H20kinetic and am super happy with it (we have low water pressure). |
awesome thank you! No hand held shower in the new house - might have to remedy that. Thanks! |
1. stop using bar soap. Use glycerin soap or body wash
I clean my shower doors while I'm in the shower at least once a week (while my conditioner is on for 5 minutes). I just use a regular scrubbie and attack them. Also, if you squeegee them every time you take a shower, it will really cut down on the maintenance. |
I refused to clean the showers in our new house until DH put a hand held shower head on. I second that recommendation! It makes it so much easier to clean. And we love it to bathe our dogs in the shower with it too. |
Get a water softener. |
Sorry to say, squegee every day is pretty much a necessity.
The daily shower cleaning products (the ones you theoretically just spray on and leave as you get out of the shower) can cope with soap scum but not hard water, and those are the spots you see building up on the glass. Every few months I use a mix of Dawn, vinegar and lemon juice that I found on Pinterest -- leave it on for an hour or so, then rinse, and it makes quite a difference. |
Squeegee + ecover limescale remover. That stuff is magic. |
