Toddler refusing to eat after having bad virus

Anonymous
Our almost 3 year old had a bad virus over the weekend. We went to the hospital when the vomiting got so bad, she was starting to get dehydrated. Pediatrician said she was fine to stay home yesterday, because she had basically stopped throwing up. Today, she licked a few things before bed, nibbled a couple of things. At this point, she really hasn't eaten in 4 days. I know I was sick just before her with something similar for 5 days, but I could eat. I just had diarrhea really badly and I was starting to get pretty dehydrated, because everything was going right through me.

When we try to feed her she says, "Mommy, stop that!" With the STOP hand gesture and all. She has basically communicated that she wants us to stop trying to feed her. We're not pushy, might try one thing every now and then. I make sure I start eating and drinking something I think she might like, or I leave a few things out on the table for the picking. A bowl of crackers, some fruit, etc. A chocolate muffin that just accidentally got left on the table... But, she won't drink juice, Gatorade or anything but water. She's drinking a lot of water, but just generally still seems pretty tired and beat down from it all.

She's down for the night, and I already have an email into the pediatrician's office asking for more feedback and a follow up appt. She's definitely nowhere near as bad as she was a few days ago. But, I guess if we just need to stay the course, I'm looking for stories of other parents who maybe got a virus recently and their little ones went awhile before they were ready to eat.

My 2 year old had it this past spring. He didn't eat normally for 4-5 days after he had been throwing up. It was mostly crackers. Lucky me I had the same bug too it took me a week to even think about meat again. I lived off of toast, crackers and grilled cheese. I think it's normal.

As long as she drinks don't worry about it. My DD had hand foot and mouth for five days and didn't eat properly for several days after that. As long as food is available her appetite will come back.

That's normal, OP. Let her get her appetite back.
