When researching my family planning options, the copper IUD looked the most appealing in terms of effectiveness, longevity, and my personal ethics, but I was terrified of the pain. Just hearing how it's inserted sounded awful and I had two horribly painful c/s recoveries, so the idea of more pain in that region of my body was the last thing I wanted. The horror stories I read online did not alleviate my fears, so now, having just gotten it done and it was not a big deal at all, I thought I should share my experience since IUD insertion in more cases than not goes really well. This is not to dismiss the legitimacy of the bad stories, but just to offer another perspective, since I think otherwise the bad stories overwhelm what's available to read out there.
I talked to my Dr about my concerns and she was really understanding. I took 2 Advil before the procedure. I got checked in. They inserted a novacaine type anesthetic in my cervix, which I was scared of, but it just felt like some pressure on my bum. It did not hurt. It was just uncomfortable and done in a few seconds and they were making small talk with me to distract from it. Then they did all the stuff you hear about in other stories, but I felt nothing. I was still chatting away when she said "all in!" and I was really surprised. I thought she hadn't started yet. It was awesome.
I'm now several days later and the confidence of knowing I'm on such an effective BC is so reassuring. I'm still bleeding some, but not bad. I took more Advil on that first evening but haven't since. I feel occasional cramps but it's not even as bad as the periods I used to get pre-baby days. It's honestly not bad in any of the ways I had read about. I wish I had read more stories like this. My Dr said that her patients come in expecting something awful, but all but a handful in her years of doing several a week have been just like me, so I feel like those considering IUDs should get to read this in balance with the other stories out there.
