I think they are a bit young looking. I did see these when I was looking for a bookshelf for my son but didn't get them for that exact reason.

I bought this for my 6YO's room. It matches with his furniture which is not from target but the color match was perfect. I vowed to never put furniture together again but it was easy, and the shelf is really sturdy.

I think he will have this shelf for years.

By 9 my kids would be making sexual jokes about them, so I wouldn't waste the money to get them for a six year old. Not everything has to be cute just because it's for kids. They can handle having a regular bookcase.

I wouldn't give those to anyone over the age of 7. You'd do better just to get a standard wood or Ikea shelf unit.

At nine? Wow, they are starting early. I have teens and they have never been like that.
