we want to stay under 20k on a used car. DH will drive it for a couple of years, and then it will be DD's car. So something that works for a middle aged man as well as a teen girl! Any ideas?
I was thinking white Ford Fusion, but not sure if it's a very exciting option for a teenager. |
| Don't get her anything exciting. Sounds fine. |

Your old minivan. Bonus: she'll always be comfortable driving larger vehicles!
(P.S. I'm obviously of the mind that vehicles for teens should be practical rather than exciting.) |

We just bought a gorgeous 2007 Subaru Forester with 67,000 miles on it for our 17-year-old to drive. It was $12,000 out the door, including all taxes, tags, etc.
Four years ago, we bought two used Honda CR-Vs for our twins (then 17)--a 1998 and a 2001. Both CR-Vs are still running beautifully, and we paid $9,000 and $11,000 at that time. My plan is to offer to retitle the vehicles in the kids' names once they graduate from college (only 9 months from now for my twins!). |

My DD will get our 2011 Subaru Outback when she drives in three years. It is almost perfect: safe (5 star), slow, and paid for. The only thing is it is a little big -- harder to drive. But, it has a low center of gravity....
It was more than 20K new, |

Here are the IIHS recommendations for used cars for teen drivers:

| I think we're looking at a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry for our son. |
This is a great size of car for a teen. Safe, insurance is often lower than a Civic or Corolla, and not too much horse power. If you want four wheel drive added, look at Legacy or Fusion. The Foresters are nice, too. |
No way. Great for dad, but way too much pep and fun for the kid. Just test drove it with the same criteria as op. |
| Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. Safe, reliable, decent gas mileage, and slightly boring. We bought a 2007 Accord for our 17 year old for $13K. |
| I'd get an AWD, like a RAV4, Honda CRV. For $20,000 get a new car that should last longer. |
| Anyone else planning to teach the kid with a manual transmission? We prefer it, and that's what we have on hand. |
Where did you buy? |
