MIL Question: Outrageous Stories

| So, MIL is old and crabby - as brief background. She has never been the nicest person, but it has come to my attention that she is downright making up stories about me. No, I am not paranoid, things have literally gotten back to me about how is that (outrageous fill in the blank here) going? Does she hate me that much behind my back? Does she just want something to talk about to try to identify with the other MILs who have (actual) reason not to like their DILs? The other thread prompted me to post. |

Mid eighties, but she has been doing this for the past ten years, about the time our children were born. No memory loss, quite the opposite! Would birth of my children spark some sort of hatred toward me? |

| I'd encourage it, and see what the most outrageous rumor is I could get started through her. But I have a really wicked sense of humor and love shit like that. |

OP here. I get this, this is fine. I would almost prefer nothing to rather mean stories, however. I have never given her reason to say anything at all about me - good or bad. As I said, I really would prefer that. If I confronted her on it, she would deny it, anyway, so there is no use saying anything to her about it. But more than one story has gotten back to me by more than one source. I told DH and he sort of handled it like MIL - flat affect. He did not seem especially surprised, he just has no emotion about her. I really don't care to involve DH, I could easily fight this battle myself, if it came to it. It is just that she would deny anything. |

| OP here. Well I won't give examples *as bad* as what has actually been claimed by MIL, but think about this: someone claiming you said/did something you did not actually do? And they were "too old" for you to call them out on it; at least that was what they were hoping?? How much fun would that be? |

| She may have a personality disorder. Read up on narcissism and bi-polar disorder. Unfortunately there are sick people like that. |

| The reason folks are asking for details is because they matter here. "DIL is strongly pro-spanking and hits the kids all the time." Is a very different lie from "DIL has a degree in art history." You asked us what we think and we just don't have enough info to even begin to be insightful here. |
