how much is reasonable to spend to furnish a family room from scratch? |
The answers will vary drastically depending on where you shop. If you pick a budget, then you can figure it out from there.
On the more mid-end (room and board, west elm, etc), 1-2500k for a rug, 1500-3000 for a couch, 800 for a side chair, 500 for a coffee table, 500-1000 for a media stand, 500 for two side tables, plus artwork , a tv, etc. |
I just furnished my entire house including kitchen and lamps but NOT including rugs for about $4,500 buying good used furniture (from a friend who was moving away) and Amazon. |
$3.50 |
I would say 5-10k. You can go cheaper by buying 2nd hand furniture or cheaper couches.
I did my whole living room for 1k and it was all from craigslist. It's a really eye catching room that gets lots of compliments. I'm a decorator on the side. |
Depends on what you want in there, which in turn depends on how you want to use the space and how large the room is. Personally, this is what I would budget, at a minimum, for a midrange room: sofa - $1,000-$2,000; coffee table - $300-$500; two side chairs - $800-$1,200; TV console table - $400-$500; TV - $400; several floor/table lights - $400-$700; rug - $300-$500; artwork - $500-$700; miscellaneous accessories - $300-$500. That's $4,400 - $7,000. It could be done somewhat cheaper, and it could be done much more expensively.
As a PP noted, you can get incredible deals on quality furnishings from Craigslist. But you may have to deal with PITA sellers and haggling. |
It depends on what you want, what you already have.
We spent: $1800 on sofa (although we actually already had the sofa, $1800 is what it cost 5 years ago from Crate and Barrel) $350 each on 2 armchairs from West Elm $300 on an 8x10 hand knotted wool rug (bought online, I have a toddler, did NOT want to spend a lot of money on a nice rug) $150 on an entertainment center type thing from World Market $400 on large scale artwork from West Elm $150 on lamps (I already had these, they cost me $150 2 years ago) from Bed Bath and Beyond $150 on 4 cushions for the couch and armchairs (Crate and Barrel) $200 on a nice tufted ottoman in place of a coffee table (Macys) $100 each on end tables from World Market TV was free bought using credit card points but add in about $500 for that So that's about $4500ish, I think. |
This is about what we spent - maybe slightly more - furnishing an entire four bedroom house when we bought our beach house a couple of years ago. Everything from craigslist and Homegoods except for mattresses and TVs. |
