| On paper, it seems like a great fit for DD. She plans to double in English and Philosophy, then go to graduate school for an MBA. Any parents or recent grads here? HR people who could share their perspective? Thank you. |
| I hated it there. A bunch of rich kids just fucking around till they inherited their parents company. I dropped out sophomore year and transferred to William and Mary, where I was much happier. Dickinson is way to small and everything revolves around frat life. Even as an athlete who started on the field hockey team her freshman year it just wasn't enough- really don't recommend the school. |

Why would you double major in English and Philosophy and then get an MBA?
It's a small school in a cruddy town, but it has its charms. F&M or Gettysburg are probably a little more charming. |
| Yes, pp here- carlum, I mean Carlisle, sucked. |
Off topic, but really do not understand the purported double major? Why? |
"Too" small, not "to" small. |

My brother went there, and didn't have a great experience. He had a hard time finding a group until sophomore year, which was partly dickinsons fault and partly his. He often couldn't get into required classes for his major and minor without a huge hassle, and other classes like intro comp a I were often closed to non majors even though they would be helpful for many kids or undeclared kids. He majored in Econ and got a job just after graduation, so that's something.
My parents in particular were not pleased. I went to bucknell and they were much more impressed with the administration. Considering the price tag, you could probably find a better run school. |
| Sorry, intro comp sci. |

Not saying this in a bad way at all! I went to an all-girls boarding school and Dickinson was known as a completely respectable college choice for the early-to-marry set. A good education and a high likelihood of getting an Mrs. degree. Those sorts of girls also got degrees in interior design. I mean this with no snark, but it being DCUM there's no way to avoid it being taken that way. Nice women go to Dickinson, the kind who also have their own horses. |
I thought that was Sweet Briar. |
Aren't you "too" precious. |
A college professor friend who regularly helps with graduate school selection and applications recommended it -- become a good thinker and writer first. I suppose a major/minor would be enough, but that's up to DD. In response to PP who meant no snark, I'm laughing! I read it without snark and thank you for your input. Interesting and certainly not my wish for DD. (and I know someone who left Seeet Briar for this reason, too!) Thank you for suggesting W&M, too. It is on the list of schools I hope she'll consider. I would be shocked if DD went Greek so something less Greek would be better. |
| These reactions are the opposite of my expericne w Dickinson. My husband is a grad and he had a wonderful time. He was a physics/philosophy double major, studied abroad in India, and our wedding was full of Dickinson people; point being its a v tight crew. He nor his friends are trust fund babies and all are doing well. He's a lobbiest for a small association, his best friend is a HS teacher, and other folks have ends up in interesting places like china and Europe for various jobs. He was in a frat. I always thought it was on par w places like Colby. Small, liberal arts, cute towns, etc. alum weekends are a hoot. |
| My DC is a recent grad and had a very good experience. Some of these comments really surprise me - I definitely didn't get the impression it was a horsey set. There is some Greek life but it's a small percent and only a very few people live in the house. It may be none for frats. |
Must be that Liberal Arts writing training coming through. |
