My wife and I currently looking at houses in Poolesville and I'm confused about the HS. I hear much about the quality of the magnet program and the school's ranking, but how is the school for the non-magnet students? Additionally, are seats reserved in the magnet programs for students that live in Poolesville?
Thanks! |

I don't think any seats are reserved in magnets for in-cluster kids. poolesville kids who don't test into and get accepted into a magnet do the independent studies program. fWIW, the building is very old and decrepit. The STEM magnet kids are in the new annex, but the rest of the school leaves a lot to be desired physically. |
I do believe kids live in Poolesville area have slight advantages but I doubt you will find anything written. Call the school directly and speak with the magnet coordinator directly. ISP kids mix in with magnet kids for some of the classes. When my DC was attending, we didn't see any tension between magnet and ISP kids. From what I can tell, they mix in pretty well. |
You would not see "tension" between the Indian and Asian magnet kids and the white Poolesville kids. |
I think it is mostly magnet so there is no need for any tension etc. 3/4 of the school is magnet (admission through testing) and 1/4 is the independent studies students (poolesville residents who did not test into the magnet) - unlike other magnet HS (RM and Blair) where the magnet is a small part of the school population. Having said that, I am sure that independent students can take magnet classes. However, if they are in a magnet class and competing with magnet kids, I wonder how it will impact their GPA and college prospects. |
| Nobody cares about STEM. Global is what everybody want to get into. |

| NP - I think 3/4 is about right. |
| Go in and talk to Ms. Bradshaw (magnet coordinator). Super, super nice lady... |
Darn. That's what my son is interested in, and I was hoping it was a bit less competitive. |
Global is less competitive to get in than STEM. |
| Global MUCH less competitive than STEM. |
Good. |
