longevity of gel-stained cabinets

I part of a decorating board on facebook and I see so many postings of people staining their cabinets with gel stain. Admittedly, they're gorgeous, but I've seen some pretty nice "before" pics too, which made me wonder if this craze is going overboard just because everyone else is doing it. Is there anyone here that's done it more than a couple years ago and know how it's lasting?
