Day or away? Fun or grueling? Which one(s)? And if your child did the day camp, was it non-stop homework after camp?

We went on a family trip with CTY and loved it. Most families were very kind, though there were one or two found it necessary to find things to complain about. The entire trip was planned well, though the leader of the group wasn't exceptional in any particular way-just nice enought.
Some parents related stories of their children having enjoyed the summer camps, though I don't have personal experience. |
Nice camp! Day or residential. |
Away. Chock full of creative activities *other* than the class subject, and just plain camp fun. She came home ready to explore more science, drop eggs off the porch to see what protected them best, and so on. Some of the other campers were nerds, but lots of them weren't. Well run and well supervised, from what we could tell. We also did a CTY family trip and found it fun, but not really exceptional. |
We sent our daughter to the CTY site at Washington College in Chestertown, MD. She went last year and again this year as a rising 7th grader. She has loved it! She learned a lot, but never complained about the workload, even though they got into some pretty high-level stuff. Last year she took the class, Sense and Perception, and this year, she took Examining the Evidence. She's a very bright girl that doesn't always think that highly of her abilities. These camps have shown her that she can hold her own with the brightest of the bright (and have fun while she's doing it!). As the previous poster said, they have plenty of other activities, including Friday night dances! Everything is very closely supervised, yet the kids come home with a great sense of independence. |
My DS (will be entering 8th grade this fall) did a 3 week residential program this summer. Really liked it. I think the work was done all in class so there was no homework. Very structured and well supervised. He wants to go back next summer. |
