H&M underwear rash

Anonymous
I don't know if this belongs in beauty & fashion or health & medicine - I bought a package of cheap but comfy cotton bikinis with lace trim from H&M. I've worn them for at least a month now without a problem, but noticed yesterday I have a raised red rash, not itchy, wherever the lace trim was touchy my skin. Anyone else experience this?

Was it more warm yesterday? Possible chafing?

Yes, I was walking around and sweating a bit... But it's only a thin Line of rash where the lace touched my skin. It's blistering and getting itchy now. Seems like an allergy. Oh well, undies in the trash.

Last Saturday, February 4, 2023, I bought some underwear having a lace from H&M store. When i tried to use the underwear, after about more than 5 hours, i had some itchiness on my skin almost 3 inches below my navel. As I tried touching it, I felt the skin was embossed. Then I tried looking at it using a mirror. I was surprised it was a long line of redness very itchy... so afraid to scratch it because it might create some wound on the area. It was the first time I encountered this kind of situation

Do you know what material the lacy part is made from? It might be modal. This kind of rash is seen from modal sometimes because of the harsh chemicals used in its production. If it is modal, stay away from it in the future.

Modal allergies aren’t as rare as you might think.

Switch back to another pair other than H&M and you’ll have your answer

Weird that you’ve worn them for a few weeks without a problem. Though maybe it took a little time for the reaction to develop? My daughter has a horrible nickel allergy, but it doesn’t always show up right away. Like, she wore her new Apple Watch for a week or two before the bit of metal on the band closure started creating welts.

But did anything else change more recently than the underwear? Assume you haven’t changed any of your laundry products?

(I’m in a desperate search for new inexpensive modal underwear and just a day or two ago was considering trying H&M. Sorry you’re dealing with this, OP, but appreciate the timely warning!)

I don't know about modal. I am not familiar with it, but thank you for the idea.
I only used one out of the three underwear i bought.
I felt sad thinking that if i use them again, i will get rash again.
I am a keloid former... whenever i have allergies... my skin pops up like embossed.
From redness to brown color, now it looks like black. I am glad it is thin now.
It is about 5 inches long straight line.

According to the tag on the underwear i bought last February 4, 2023,
it says that the product...

Shell: 97% nylon, 3% spandex
Wide lace parts: 96% nylon, 4% spandex
Narrow lace parts: 83% nylon, 17% spandex
Crotch lining: 100% cotton

Thank you for the idea about modal.
How will i know it? it does not say on the tag.

I prefer modal underwear and had never heard about chemicals, so I looked it up. It’s made from beech trees (!), which are pulped and then are indeed soaked in chemicals like sulfuric acid. Rayon is a close relative.

In your case, turns out there’s no modal in your specific pair, just nylon and spandex. Does the lace feel rough or have any poke-y bits that could irritate the skin by rubbing? If not, must be something in those materials.

Did you go back to your old underwear or not??? This is not rocket science! 🤦‍♂️

Just throw them out. They're cheap.

Someone with some sense and sensibility!

Ok, I have to ask - did you wash them before you wore them?

Yes the lace feels rough. Maybe you're right because of the rubbing. Thank you.
