Custody arrangement with military spouse

I've been thinking about divorce for years, but can't fathom the thought of being separated from my kids. Since DH is active duty military and I wouldn't continue to move with him, joint custody (which is a given) would be complicated and require longer periods of separation than for parents who live in the same place. Do any of you have experience with this? How did you negotiate the agreement? How did it effect the kids? How did you deal with being seperated from them?

This is why I have continued to stay married to a spouse who has been unfaithful, disrespectful and controlling. I'm unhappy.
