Switching Schools

It looks like we are going to switch our daughter's school in 2 weeks. She is in kindergarten now, and space in a school that would be a great match for her and our family just opened up. But... it is all fairly abrupt. Any ideas how to make this transition easier for her?

See if you can take her for a few visits before starting full time. Has she just started the current program? If so, consider pulling her out earlier so she forms fewer attachments before having to leave. Good luck.

Why not just wait until the year ends and then make the switch? Our child changed schools between K and 1st grade. We told him he'd be going to a new school several weeks after K ended. He had time to digest it and there was a break from the routine. It was a very smooth transition.

What 11:19 said. Also, is this a private school?

I agree with this.

OP here - We actually live abroad and the school she is currently attending is not a great match for us at all. Her teachers don't have specific training in education. The teacher has a h.s. degree and maybe 5 yrs as a teachers assistant. This is her first year as the lead teacher. And the current teacher is 17 yo, never worked with kids before.

Academically our daughter is doing fine, but we really don't like the way they handle the social interactions of kids, discipline, etc. The school we want to switch her to has just opened up to younger grades, due to the demand here. Previously they only had secondary school. The teacher is well-trained with a bachelors degree, a teaching certificate, and a number of years teacher children - no corporal punishment, individualized lesson plans, etc.

Normally we would wait until the summer to switch, but we just feel like this is such a huge improvement to her current school that we really don't want to wait.

OP: There's corporal punishment? It sounds like it. If so, that's compelling. I'd do what 11:03 suggests. Good luck.
