If I want a "greener" mattress for DC but don't want to spend a fortune

Anonymous
Where can I go? I will not spend $1300 on a Naturepedic mattress. Can anyone recommend a place/brand they liked for their DC?

Thank you!

Ikea!

"Natural/Synthetic Latex Blend

As an alternative to an all-natural latex mattress, natural/synthetic blend mattresses are available, and they tend to cost less. This one from Ikea contains 85 percent natural and 15 percent synthetic latex, and wool as fire retardant.

Product pick: Ikea Sultan Edsele Natural Latex Mattress, $979 (queen)"

Please do not buy an IKEA mattress. We had a horrible experience with one of their children's mattresses stinking for WEEKS after we bought it. Finally returned it but it was a hassle.

We are replacing it with the Beautyrest Beginnings mattress, which was more expensive, but not as much as Naturepedic. We are buying a twin, though, so it is cheaper. A lot of reviewers said it had no smell at all, it's low VOC, and doesn't use phthalates, formaldehyde, methylene chloride, CFCs, PBDEs, mercury, lead and heavy metals. It is "Certi-PUR US certified" for whatever that's worth.

They have a pillowtop which seemed excessive for a 2 year old used to a crib mattress, but I wanted something comfortable enough for Mom and Dad, too. http://www.landofnod.com/twin-simmons-beautyrest-beginnings-plush-mattress/s300829 I get it next week, so hopefully we will like it better than the IKEA one!

We have one of these in our spare room--it's quite comfortable!

We have all Ikea box springs and two mattresses and have had no problems. For twin beds we got the Naturepedic. But, we bought the top of line with Ikea...

Of all the things to go recycle-reduce-reuse on, mattresses are not one of them.

Why? You can inspect for bedbugs. Mites don't carry disease. Many encasement products are available (allergy, waterproofing, etc) if what you're concerned about is bodily fluids. Have you ever stayed in a hotel?

Try Room and Board.

We went with this and have been very happy with it for our 3-year old. Was much cheaper than other organic mattress options, and its frankly more comfortable than the one on our own bed.

Mattresses don't last forever. A used mattress will have molded to someone else's shape, will not be as supportive as a new one, and ew, gross.

We like Ikea's foam mattresses for both adults and kids.
