Hearing loud noises that aren't there, inducing panic attacks.

Anonymous
This started yesterday, for the most part, I have exploding heart syndrome and have had it since I was younger. But this is something new. Yesterday in the shower, I thought I heard our dryer making the noise it makes when something is stuck in the door. It violently crashs and knocks anything off the top.

I heard it for a good 5-10 minutes getting madder and madder that my husband wouldn't get up and shut it up, I ended up having a panic attack. I stormed out of the bathroom and whipped open the laundry room and everything was off, dryer was cool to the touch and he hadn't been doing clothes.

Then this morning at 530, I heard a loud bang that woke me up and sounded like my front door being slammed shut. I sat there for a few minutes and listened to what sounded like my son banging around the cabinets and fridge slamming doors. I got pissed and had another panic attack and walked out to yell at him for being so loud only to find no one there. He was fast asleep. I am hearing things, they are making me mad, and then I have a panic attack. what is wrong with me?

Sounds like auditory hallucinations. I would mention to your doctor ASAP.

I'd see your doctor as soon as you can get an appointment. I've never heard of this, but it sounds like something that you shouldn't let go...

I have "heard" loud bangs that wake me up before. I think they are just part of my dreams and don't think that is too concerning. But yes it seems like you should get checked out.

If you're not just waking up as it happens I would see your doc. Are you in any medication that could cause this? Are the panic attacks a new thing?

Hoe old are you?

Hallucinations can be caused by anxiety. The panic attacks would seem linked to that. Any history of anxiety or reason to believe that could be at play here?

There are illnesses that can trigger sudden mental changes. UTIs in the elderly especially can do that. Would try to go back and look at other causes I've come across, Op, if you think anxiety isn't a reasonable possibility.

BTW I found references to exploding head syndrome but not exploding heart syndrome. Exploding head syndrome seems to be very much about auditory hallucinations and could be your explanation. It appears to be a sleep disorder, so I guess a neurologist who deals with those would be the right specialist.

A panic attack is different from what you describe. You're getting angry.

Try to work through something that you may be suppressing?

Do you mean exploding head syndrome? If so isn't that pretty much what you are describing? Hearing loud noises that aren't there?

Do you have hearing loss? Sometimes your brain will create noises when there's an absence due to hearing loss.
Otherwise I would go see a psychologist.
