Very Depressed - hypothyroid

Anonymous
So everytime I try to get my hopes up I feel like something else is going wrong. I finally got all of my test done and am ready to start fertility treatment when bam, something else goes wrong. My TSH level is extremely high and now I have to figure out what is wrong with that before the fertility treatment can start. I am not sure why it is flaring up all of a sudden or how long it will take to get back down. Of course it is just another hurdle in this already upsetting journey. I could use some positive stories if anyone has had a hypothyroid problem and was able to control it and get pregnant. WIth all the other fertitlity issues I am having I just don't need this. I am really down.

I have thyroid nodules and will have my thyroid removed sometime this year, so your post caught my eye. I'm sorry I don't have any advice or personal stories, but I just wanted to offer you support and best wishes.

When I was TTC (for five long years) I spend a lot of time on the boards at Resolve.org, the national IF org. I think the odds of you finding people with exactly your situation are way higher on those boards - plus it's a really supportive environment. For inspiration, you might also want to check out BabyStepsForum.org (or .com - sorry, can't remember which!). It's an offshoot of Resolve and mostly composed of people who got pregnant after IF but who have formed a great and very very supportive community for anyone going through IF.

Best of luck to you!

I found out I had a high TSH (highest level was 10) while doing my baseline testing to start IVF to conceive our second child. I went to an endocrinologist my RE recommended and I had it under control within 6 weeks. Usually it takes at least a month to give the meds enough time to get it under control. I'm currently pregnant thanks to IVF and have been monitored monthly by my endocrinologist so we can tinker with the doses of meds as needed. It is an annoying set back to have to wait to get it under control but I think it's no unusual and is should be something that can be resolved fairly easily with medication so you then can start your fertility treatments. Good luck!

PP - Can you please tell me who you are seeing? I need a good endocronogist. I would really appreciate it.

I'd also be interested in knowing this. Thanks!

I go to Dr. Roy Langley at Northern VA Endocrinologist. He is located near Fairfax INOVA on M,W, F. I think he is at their Fair Oakes INOVA location the other 2 days. I've been really happy with him - he doesn't run behind in appointments, nice bedside manner, etc. Here is their website - it's pretty bare bones but can give you his contact information. Good luck!

I have hypothyroid and Hoshimoto's and i just gave birth to a little girl 2 weeks ago. I go to Dr. Helana Rodbard in Rockville, and she is amazing. Whatever endo you decide on, make sure they check your antibodies to make sure you do not have Hoshimoto's. Dr. Rodbard keeps a close watch on all of my levels and adjusts my meds often. During my pregnancy (especially in the 1st trimester) she increased my dosage 4 times.

Question to 12:56 (new poster here): would you mind telling me the approximate range of your antibodies during your pregnancy?

I have Hashimoto's as well (diagnosed after my son (IVF success) was born 2 years ago). We're hoping to do a FET next year, and I'm trying to do all I can now to get the hypothyroidism/ Hashimoto's under control. My TSH is around 2 and I feel fine, but my antibodies fluctuate in the 60-100 range. I'm trying to understand where they should be before even attempting the FET, and where we need them to stay during the pregnancy. Also, I'm just on Synthroid - did they put you on any other meds?

I know that every case is different, and I'm not looking to this board as my sole source for medical advice, but hearing others' experiences really is very helpful. Thanks in advance!
