I found this article looking for some getaway ideas and thought I would post it as it had so many good ideas. http://www.travelchannel.com/destinations/us/dc/washington-dc/articles/washington-dc-weekend-getaways

The most obvious trips. Sigh. There must be other places worth traveling to within 3-5 hours, right???

Thank you for sharing!

They might be obvious for longtime Washingtonians, but for a family like ours that has only been here a couple of years, I thought this list was full of good ideas. We have yet to go sailing in St. Michael's and have always wanted to hike Old Rag Mountain!

I wasn't knocking the poster, pp. I was lamenting the limited choices. If you google daytrips from dc, you'll find these. And if you've read dcum for the last few months, you've seen these places listed. They come up all the time.

So again, there must be other places worth visiting...what are they?

PS - No need to assign malicious intent to posts. And no need to assume that a comment is a personal attack.

Well, yeah, within 5 hours? Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, State college, NYC, all of the Delmarva, Dolly Sods, Staunton, Charlottesville, Richmond, Charlotte, All of the Blue Ridge, Winchester, Middleburg, the entire state of Pennsylvania, Fallingwater, Ohiopyle, Irvington Va., the list goes on.

Thanks for sharing! Kinda new to the area so hadn't heard of some of these.

Does anyone know if the cabins at Old Rag allow dogs?

They will if you ask them. We have stayed at Rose River before and they allowed us to bring our dog as long as we followed a few rules. Did not even charge a pet fee. Nice people.

Try these http://www.patc.net/PublicView/Cabins/PublicView/Custom/PATC_Cabins/Cabins.aspx?hkey=5f0b8e83-6571-45fb-aec3-819ca09d651c

I think I will stick with the Travel Channel recommendation. Those PATC cabins look a bit to rustic for my taste.
