Big rectangular living room needs to be our home office

Anonymous
The gist of my question: Anyone know how to make a big rectangular room a useful home office, while looking somewhat decorated and mess-contained?

I am just so frustrated because I have a lovely room with no function, and a need for a home office but no room for it.

We live in an older stone rancher. The front room is a huge, rectangular living room, with a big, curved window on one of the long sides and a fireplace on the other. It's a big room, but these two features make it tough to have a huge table or desk surface with file cabinets, etc. in the center. Off to the side, it makes even less sense. (Not much room in the corners because soon you're encroaching on the curved window or the fireplace). The short sides of the rectangle both have entry ways, one to the DR, one to the foyer.

Also, we have a curved Henredon sofa next to the curved window; the original owners had it custom made to fit the window and I'm attached to it plus I think the window is hard to work with anyway.

Anyone have a home office in a similarly arranged space?

How about it you made two smaller working/sitting areas within, rather than one huge desk with file cabinets?

Break it into a work area past the curved window/fireplace, and a different work look in front of these. A sitting area (two arm chairs or such) with a small round table for winter work tea for two might be charming. Buy file cabinets that are not metal but wood look and such. Add a nice rug in the sitting area, and art on the fireplace wall of the two work areas. GL.

Room divider? Break it in half with a screen or some bookcases. Put the desk in front of the screen on the DR side; make a little library/book nook on the other side.

Where are the doors placed on the walls and how large are they?

Is the bow window and the fireplace centered on their walls?

Bow window and fireplace are centered on the long sides.

The living room is sunken, with two steps up to go to the dining room or the entry way.

Thank you for the ideas! I am also going to get houzz people to weigh in, as suggested.

Can you put a desk behind a couch?
