Should I put carpet in all the bedrooms? I really would prefer wood though.

Laminate for sure. I put carpet in about 15 months ago and regret not springing for the laminate to match the public areas.

Just moved into a house with beautiful original hardwoods and I miss the carpet in the bedrooms. I just think it's cozier and like that it muffles sounds. I'm probably in the minority.

What price range house? Laminate is terrible and I wouldn't do it except maybe if your house is really cheap and hardwood would be an overimprovement. Hate carpet.

I'm with you. Carpet is so much cozier.

Carpet is disgusting. In our old house we had carpets in the bedrooms. I liked it due to coziness factor. Kids rolled around on carpet, warm on the feet in winter, etc. We moved into a house that has hardwood everywhere but the bathroom (those have tiles). I sweep the bedrooms every third day and I am grossed out how much dirt and dust I pick up. I mop with a very slightly damp mop every week and the mop/water is dirty. No way a vacuum cleaner picks up all the stuff in a carpet.

If you remove the carpet yourself and see what is under it (we did), hardwood or laminate is appealing. I like hardwood or laminate and large area rugs.

Not carpet

I know I am in the major, major minority on this board but we just ripped up our main level carpet and put in laminate. The carpet was so incredibly disgusting (and I do a decent job keeping the house clean). I am still a little she'll shocked at how dirty the carpet was. Laminate was really our only choice due to budget and very large dogs. Installed it ourselves over a weekend and saved several grand. I figure when it's time to sell in many years from now I can have hardwood put in. I don't want hardwood because it will get ruined in my house.

+1. We have new carpet in our guest room (nice hardwood underneath, but not going to refinish at this juncture) and it makes it such a cozy room. And I love vacuuming in there. When it's not so new, yeah I can see it being gross, but carpet is pretty inexpensive to install.
