public schools

how do you gauge how good the public school you are assigned to is? we are in PWC and our elementary school is a 8/10 on great schools, unfortunately the middle school scored a 4/10. I've heard so many raves about fairfax county schools previously that we considered moving to be in a better school district.

what other resources are out there to gauge how good your schools are?

Montgomery, Fairfax, and Howard all have profiles of individual schools listed on their websites. These types of profiles list things like standardized test scores, FARMS rates, transiency rates, suspension rates, etc. These aren't determiniative of whether a school is good or not, but they could be useful in helping you figure out whether a school is a good fit for your child. I don't know if Prince William County offers the same thing, but definitely check.

You could always have a look at AYP numbers (NCLB data).
