Constipation at 50... New norm?

Anonymous
Every since I turned 50 I have bathroom regularity issues. Anyone else? I have always been "regular" and eat the same for years, healthy with greens. Don't know what gives? Does being constipated or hard stool indicate a major health problem?

You may want to have your thyroid levels checked. Especially if you are female. Thyroid levels can affect digestive issues.

Lifelong constipation sufferer here, female. Diet always worked until I had a hysterectomy. Now I cannot go unless I use Miralax every freakin' day. New normal for me. I also have a rectocele btw.

Did you recently start taking a multivitamin with Iron? The Iron can be constipating.

Calcium, too. Ugh.

I'm 50 and no problems. Drinking plenty of fluids and exercising a lot?

Get Fiber Choice fruity tablets. One a day makes the poop come out.

Definitely get your thyroid levels checked. Constipation is one of the many symptoms of hypothyroidism. It happened to me after turning 50.

Drink lots of water.

I never worried about "regularity." I go when I go and don't worry about it.

Metamucil wafers!

Yes. I'm the same age and I've been noticing that more. I really think that it's an hormonal thing (starting to go through menopause). Exercise helps.

if you haven't started getting colonoscopies, get one.

Not to be alarmist, but the only real symptom of my colon cancer was constipation. (mixed with days with loose stools)
I'm not sure if it was really a symptom of the cancer, or if the inflammation in my colon was setting the stage for the cancer. Maybe both. But you should be getting colonoscopies anyway at 50, or?
