Breast Reduction

Anyone had it done? I'd love to hear your experiences, recommendations, etc. I'm also interested in how much it cost.

Yes. I did it in 1991 or 1992 (can't remember exactly), when I was about 20. It was a great decision for me. It alleviated a lot of back pain that I didn't even fully realize I had until it was gone. I can't remember how much it was, but it was totally paid for by insurance in my case. The one downside was that my milk production was severely limited.

Op here. Thanks for the reply. My nursing days are over, so the milk production thing is ok for me.

What was the recuperation like?

I don't remember it as being too bad. But I do recall being in bed for a while. Sorry I don't have more insight (memory) on that one...

I would love to hear recommendations on doctors in the area. I am planning on doing a BR too. Thanks!

9:10 am poster here. Sorry, mine was done out of state. I seem to recall this being discussed before though. You might want to search the archives and see what turns up.

Dr. Feledy at
www.belmontplasticsurgery.com
He has training in cosmetic and reconstructive (which is extra training that many plastic surgeon's don't do). He did a BR on my friend and she looks great. She told me he did special training for cancer patients where he removes the cancer and can build a breast from skin he takes from the patient's tummy tuck reconnecting all the blood vessels and nerves.....that's why she trusted him with the reduction.

I had great results with Dr. Fleury. However, he is expensive and not very supportive of working with your insurance.

I am trying to decide on this as well.

I had a consult with Dr. Fleury and agree he is great--very patient and makes sure to answer every question, treats you with respect. I actually was given his name by a female friend who is a physician and a patient of his.
A good friend of mine had her reduction done by Dr. Scott Spear at Georgetown. I also went to him for a consultation. He is a breast guru--I think cancer reconstructions, cosmetic reductions, lifts and implants are pretty much all he does. However, his bedside manner is pleasant but isn't as comforting as Dr. Fleury's, and I hated his office set-up--a terrible voice mail system (one of those deals where you press 1 for the surgery department, go into a new menu to select 1 for the dept of plastic surgery, then another menu where you make another selection, and then get sent into Dr. Spears assistants voice mail. The thought of having a post-op emergency and having to navigate that mess was a huge turnoff. Both Dr. Spear and Dr. Fleury were in the $15k-$18k range for bi-lateral reduction.

I found a good book called "When Less is More", a breast surgeon's guide to all the things to consider when getting a breast reduction, and bought it used on the web for a couple of bucks. Helpful information, though not something to leave out on the coffee table.
