When you're on vacation with the whole family

Are you okay with splitting up? We were in the Caribbean last week and had a day at the beach where DD1 and 2 and I wanted to snorkel and DS hates snorkeling so he kayaked instead (it was all contained on one smallish beach) while the girls and I snorkeled. DH wanted to lounge under an umbrella with a John Grisham novel ( ) so he participated in none of these activities. I told my neighbor this and he was all, "What?! Vacation is a time to be together!" and it got me thinking.

A week together.... Everyone needs time apart during the week

Absolutely fine!

If you were all happy with it, I'd say it worked.

Yup. I'm assuming your kids are teens/tweens if you're in this forum, and a grumpy 15 year old ruins the fun for everyone.

Who supervised the kayaking?

That would all work for me.

Not OP, but my kids go kayaking together without adults all the time.

Of course it's fine. Part of the fun of chatting with people you love, is coming back together to discuss adventures. If you're always with everyone there's nothing to tell them because they were there.

We absolutely split up. It's everyone's vacation and everyone should get to spend some time doing what they want. Some 'forced family fun" is good too. But all week. NO WAY. I have a 12yr old DD and a 9 yo boy. They have different interests . . .
