I wasn't sure why you would bother locking this. I wasn't posting to it but it seemed pretty typical. Is any thread that goes off topic subject to being shut down, even if people are engaged?

It's a case by case basis. Topics like circumcision almost always devolve to repetitive arguments in which nothing new is being said. Because the threads get so contentious, it is almost impossible to ask a simple question on the topic. If someone is upset because they wanted to post to that thread, they just need to wait a day or two because another one will come along and everyone will say exactly the same thing.

I guess, I just wonder why you bother getting involved. The exact same complaint could have been made about the recent 80+ page thread on SAHMs. The difference seems to be the presence of a person who bothered to ask.

Yep, that's the only difference. I've locked countless SAHM threads and would lock another without blinking.
