Selling a Japanese Maple

Anonymous
I have a nice, mature Japanese maple in front of my house that I am thinking of selling. Has anyone done this? Do I just put it on craigslist? How do I know how to price it? Will someone actually buy it?

How are you planning to dig it out and then transport it? I would think that would be the hardest part....

Let me know if you dig it out, I will buy...

I'm hoping the buyer would do the transport part! I guess I would give a discounted price in that case? DH and I would help dig it out but it is a 9 ft tall tree. The width of the tree is 5 feet. Is that too big at this point?

The reason I want to sell it is because my mother has developed a weird allergy to japanese maples and I did not even know that is a thing.

op- I mean the width of the trunk is 5 inches.

List on craigslist or neighborhood listservs. Folk who want it will hire a landscaper to dig and transport.

NP. How much would that sell for?

This is a pretty big tree at this point and bigger trees have a much tougher time being moved.

I would not attempt this until the weather has cooled considerably and the tree is dormant (meaning it has dropped its leaves) -- it is too stressful for the tree now..

The root zone is going to be pretty big. You can start by root pruning it.

Here's an article that can help:

http://gardening.about.com/od/gardenprimer/g/RootPruning.htm

And here's a guide to determining the root zone:

A measurement of the trunk should be taken at diameter breast height (DBH) or 4.5 feet above the ground. Then measuring outwards from the trunk 1.25 feet for every inch of trunk diameter, the resulting area is the critical root zone. For example, a 20-inch diameter tree would require a 30-foot area of protection around the tree for the critical root zone. This is a minimum area of protection, but a larger area is preferred.

No. Professionals will not touch it unless you are paying them. It will be cheaper to buy a new one in a container that has been shaped. In the trade(depending on what type of maple it is) a 5" cal Japanese maple will cost $195-$650. You may spend that much digging it out and moving it. A 5" caliber tree should have a 50-55" rootball=3000 pounds.
Post it on Craigslist. Do yourself a favor and do not offer to help dig it.

Allergies - read carefully.

OP here- ok that sounds like a big pain I will leave the tree alone. Mom will just have to stay away from it! I was just hoping that someone else would get to enjoy it and we could get a little bit of money for it!

If you are sure its the tree bothering your mother, why not cut it down? I hate killing trees but in this case it makes sense.

No, it's a poison-ivy type allergy, it only bothers her if she touches the tree. It must have something to do with maple sap or something. She doesn't go in the front yard much anyway. I figured since she has that allergy and people love those trees and it's just getting bigger and bigger, maybe I should try selling it. But it sounds like it's going to be too much of a problem.
