Anyone know why we are not getting proximity preference?

Anonymous
We are IB for the cluster school but live more than 1 mile away from Watkins (school finder shows exactly a mile). We live less than 1/2 a mile away from Ludlow. The myschooldc site is not showing that we have a proximity preference at Ludlow. http://find.myschooldc.org

Anyone know why?

3000 feet from the actual school -- usually around 3 blocks

I know all about Peabody -- 2 DCs attended. I just thought that your distance from Watkins doesn't matter because you are IB closer to Peabody. The people who live IB near Watkins are also a mile from Peabody. That's why they have the bus.

But it's all about how far it is to walk to your elementary school. Does the bus negate the regulation?

Does anyone have a link to the regs?

The general proximity preference is described this way on myschooldc -

Proximity preference
Students who live greater than a half mile walking distance from their zoned DCPS elementary school will receive a proximity preference in the out-of-boundary lottery to a DCPS zoned elementary school that is a half mile or less walking distance from their home.

Is there something special for these Hill schools in addition to that?

Aren't Peabody and Watkins considered one school? I thought the proximity preference was for the closest point on the school's property. So, if the closest portion of the Peabody OR Watkins campus is within half a mile, then there's no proximity preference.

Peabody and Watkins share a gerrymandered boundary.

But it's not about the boundary. It's about the walking distance to the actual school.

It sounds like OP is inbounds for Peabody and Watkins and is interested in proximity preference for Ludlow Taylor.

OP, I would check google maps to get the actual distance from your house to LT, as I have heard unconfirmed rumors that that measurement is what DCPS is using. I would then call myschooldc to see what they say.

LT is .3 from my house using google maps or the myschooldc site. Watkins is 1.2 with google maps and 1 with the myschooldc site.

How far is Peabody?

myschool dc probably programmed this wrong. Just call them and see if you can get the preference. You are probably not the only one for whom this got screwed up.

They are not that good at the details of mapping and priorities--for example, if you put in an address in the Van Ness boundary for a 3rd grader into the school finder, it doesn't give you any in-bounds school. The IB school there is Amidon-Bowen for grades 1-5. I told them this months ago but it still hasn't been fixed; they said it's too hard to assign different IB elementaries for different grades.
