New to the area - considering a one week beach vacation at Rehoboth or Cape May, end of Aug. Is there enough to do there for a week - in addition to the beach? Which one is a better choice? We have a 4 yr old.
Also looking for recommendations re: rental agencies. Not having much luck finding an ocean front rental through vrbo. Thanks! |
Rehoboth is a great family friendly beach with a small boardwalk, Funland (mostly kiddie rides perfect for a 4 year old), and traditional boardwalk stuff (games, pizza, ice cream, etc). If you haven't had luck on vrbo you can try jacklingo.com (one of the main DE beaches rental agencies, the website is very good for looking at properties and available dates) but it is probably late to get a full week's rental on an oceanfront property. |
More to do with a 4 year old in rehobeth I believe - mini golf, water parks, boardwalk rides at funland etc |
We've done both with children, and prefer Cape May for sure. |
Love rehoboth, there isn't much oceanfront in terms of rentals, try to find something in south rehoboth within 2-3 blocks of the beach, your 4 yr old will love funland |
Cape May, for sure.
Rehoboth has more oceanfront rentals (in the manner of OBX: new-home giant construction with 9 decks, 7 bathrooms and ivory vinyl siding.) So there's a point for Rehoboth. The beaches are all free, another win for RB. But all other indicators point to Cape May: the beaches are more plentiful and more beautiful. They are 700% less crowded. The town is prettier and much more extensive. There is mini golf, and it's adorable. Speaking very very specifically about a 4 year old now, the experience at Wildwood (an 11 minute drive along a stunning coastline) is incomparable. Funland is super sweet, and we went all the time when DS was 2-6 y.o. But, Morey's Piers in Wildwood -- esp. the Surfside pier -- have more and better rides for a **4 yr old** than even Disney. I am not making this up. You know, the 'baby rides'. The boardwalk in Wildwood is louder and much more obnoxious than that in Rehoboth. I wouldn't hang there with a young child though -- I'd just leave the amusement park and drive back to my cute place in beautiful Cape May. |
Also prefer cape may.
Clean, quiet, family friendly. |
I prefer Cape May. It’s clean, beautiful and the mall area is nice for shopping and dinner. The beaches are not crowded. |
Cape May is wonderful with kids. Agree re Wildwood being a worthwhile morning (get there at opening and no concerns about rowdy crowds!). Downtown Cape May can't be beat, and my kids love the nature center in Cape May point. |
Cape May is very New Jersey. I grew up the South and find New Jersey culture to be too brash and showy, thus I prefer Rehoboth. Also, Rehoboth food prices are more reasonable. |
Either will work! With a 5-year old, the Cape May zoo and planning to take the ferry one way would sway me to Cape May. Look at Sandpiper. |
We prefer Rehoboth. You can plan a day trip on the Ferry from Lewes-Cape May though. We’ve done that from Rehoboth.

I much prefer the history and food in Cape May. I feel the beaches are less crowded too. |
