Reupholstering Sofa

Anonymous
I have a sofa from Crate and Barrel that I paid maybe j$1,500 for about 3 years ago. Between a dog and a toddler, the sofa is looking rough. Is it worth reupholstering (considering that it is not a fancy sofa)? I don't know what the cost of reupholstering is but if it is over a certain number I may be better off just buying a new sofa. Any thoughts?

Do you love it except for the yuck?

Reupholstering is expensive. If you think the toddler and dog have a few more years of damage in them, I'd buy an off-the-rack slipcover and wait until kindergarten or so.

You're almost always better off buying a new off the rack sofa than getting reupholstered. Reupholstery is crazy expensive. If you go to a calico corners type place to buy upholstery-level fabric, it'll be at least $50/yd - and you need 10-15 yards - so fabric alone will be like $750-$1000. You can always find fabric a lot cheaper somewhere else, but then you have to invest the time in finding said cheaper off-market place. The labor will be $500-1000. They'll probably also charge you like $200 for delivery and pickup.

Sunbrella fabric is going to be a lot less than $50/yard (less than $30, depending on what you pick), and is a good choice for a sofa that is seeing some hard living.

But the labor is still going to be expensive.

I bought upholstery fabric on eBay to redo my Crate & Barrel sofa. Commercial grade Maharam Fabric $180 (last years pattern). $400 to reupholster. Cheaper than a new sofa and fabric quality superior.

NP--what upholsterer did you use?

Have you considered a washable slipcover?
