Terrible trolls on Fairfax Underground

Anonymous
I've visited the site a few times but generally stick to DCUM. Now when people complain about the site being mean... I can shake my head and think about how much worse it could be.

Fairfax Underground is lower than the nastiest, most vile sewer. Many of the posters could learn lessons in kindness and civility from rats.

You must truly be bored if youngo on that site, OP.

Wow. That is sadism. I hope Basl gets his comeuppance for targeting someone with Asperger's and depression.

Did anyone come to understand how the one troll got his victims real name (and address?)

I guess I assume through hacking, but the article didn't actually say, did it?

I was just telling DH at dinner that there should be some legislation specific to this kind of trolling cyber crime, punishable by something akin to manslaughter. He destroyed this guy's life, and charging him with a string of harrassment and stalking crimes couldn't ever add up to the kind of personal annihilation that he achieved. Sick, sick, sick.

pp here. thanks. even with hacking though, there would have to be a database somewhere (presumably under FU admin) that had the victim's real name (and maybe address). Would anyone really give out this info while registering for a screen name on a message board?

I guess I was wondering if troll somehow got an IP address (perhaps through hacking) and then traced it to a specific address?

The latter would really concern me as a security issue for all of us

Not shocking that place is the bane of the internet.

Whenever I look at that site, it feels like a bunch of teenagers posting completely inappropriate things.

I found UFFX before I found this one. What a difference! Although, to be fair, it wasn't as nasty as it is now. At one time it was relatively sane and at times helpful

it’s almost completely un-moderated. That’s the problem. There has to be a happy medium between too-much and not-enough moderation.

Unfortunately it doesn't take hacking to find out personal details. Most people post way too much information about themselves online - even if it's just breadcrumbs. A loonie with enough time and interest will pursue those breadcrumbs and dig up dirt.

For example, lots of bloggers form LLCs or register trademarks to protect brands and domains. It's easy to find those registrations and usually they are tied to a home address versus a law firm or other safe location.

So many people post pictures of kids and post identifying details including name of school or teacher or sports team. Now strangers can find your kids and call them by name.

It's so important to protect anonymity. I have a personal practice of never posting my son's face online. I might have his face in shadow or otherwise hidden. It's not his choice at this age to show his face and once he was past the baby age I stopped posting.

I have friends and family that post report cards because they are proud and then forgot to crop out names of the kid and teacher.

There are crazy people out there, that's for sure

It never ceases to amaze me, how stupid people are, about posting their information. Thinking they are "impressing" people, they are really just setting themselves up for bad news. Your job is to keep yourself off the internet, not try to fabricate something that is easily discernible. Stu-pid!

Finding out who is really posting is incredibly easy. I thought everyone knew this.

Or s/he didn't know. After a number of PPs here denigrated Virginia residents who use DCUM, I went over there. For about ten minutes. Yuck.
