Is my a/c broken or just overwhelmed?

Anonymous
Around 3:00 this afternoon, our a/c appeared to stop working and the temp went up to 80. We had it set only at 76. The system kept making noise, but it was HOT and stuffy and not blowing cool air that we could feel. Went up to 82 and stayed around that temp until the sun went down. Now it seems to be coming down again gradually and we can feel cool air coming from the vents again. Was it just too hot for it to keep up today? Should we have someone come look at it?

Sounds like it's on the fritz to me-- I would have someone look at it.

Make sure the condensator line which drains the water from the unit is not blocked. If it is the water could cause serious problems.

You have an issue.

You can take a shop vac to the end of the line and get it unblocked. Otherwise call someone in. Or, get a window unit at Costco till you can get it fixed.

In addition to a clogged drainage line, I suggest opening the largest panel unit (the cover is easily unscrewed) and check to see if the condenser is frozen up. If so, turn on the heat for about 10 min to thaw it out. This is just a symptom of another issue. Make sure your outside compressor unit is running when your AC is on. If it is overworking itself, you could have blown a capacitor, which will disable the compressor. It's a $3 part (although repairs run 100-150 for this call) but if the outside unit isn't working, your AC is useless. Last culprit, lack of coolant or a coolant leak.

Can you tell I've dealt with this before? I've been limping along my HVAC for about 3 years now.

Probably about to break.

Check the coolant level. When it gets low it acts just the way you describe. You need to get on that ASAP.
